If something is made to order, it means that a company has manufactured it  to customer specifications. We use this term to describe an item that a seller has manufactured to meet a specific set of requirements. Some people use the abbreviation MTO.

We can write the term  with or without a hyphen, i.e. by command or by command. However, if you write an article, you have to be consistent. If you start with a dash, use them throughout your text.

Fast food restaurants that have  meals made to order

When I buy a meal at a fast food restaurant, it is usually cooked to order. For example, at McDonald’s, I can order a regular or large meal, with or without fries, with or without onions, and so on. McDonald’s employees do not prepare meals until they have received instructions from the customer.

Collins Dictionary has the following definitions of the term:

“first. If something is made to order, it is made  to someone’s specific request. 2. Custom built according to the wishes or requirements of a particular individual. 3. Comply with customer specifications or measurements; custom made. 4. Perfect fit or fit.

Built to order

We also use the built-in term for ordering. However, make-to-order is more common when it comes to machinery.

For highly configurable products such as  servers, vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles, we may use the term made-to-order. A defense company can supply a made-to-order fighter. This means that the customer, usually the government, has specific requirements.

Made-to-order

We use the term bespoke or bespoke with the same meaning as bespoke. However, we only use “made to measure” when talking about personalized clothing.

Tailor-made contrasts with ready-to-wear or ready-to-wear.

I expect a  jacket designed to fit me perfectly. However, if I were to choose a ready-to-wear jacket, I would have to try on several before I find  the right one for me.

Bespoke suits are significantly more expensive than comparable ready-to-wear suits.
