Over the years, Crossplay features have been added to various games by many developers. Many popular games like pubg, fortnite, and Rocket League have their combined Xbox and Playstation Server to facilitate faster matchmaking times. Overwatch was released in 2016 and since then, the players have asked for cross-platform support, and they have reasons too. Most popular multiplayer shooter games such as Fortnite, Call of Duty, and Paladin Crossplay support.
Is the overwatch cross-platform support support?
This is a question of most Overwatch fans looking and want answers like ‘yes’. Even though Overwatch cleans all levels to become CrossPlay, it’s not one yet. You can even find the game in Nintendo Switch but has been saved separately.
In accordance with the statement issued by the Blizzard support page, here is what you need to know:
“PC and console version of Blizzard is a separate game and not the progress of stock, or allows to play on other platforms. PC, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Playstation Players all play in separate ecosystems.
On PC, your friend’s list will be filled by your Blizzard account friends. On the Xbox, you will be part of the Xbox Live Network, on Nintendo your friend will come from the Nintendo network, and the Playstation list of your friends will come from the Playstation network.
If you want to play on multiple platforms, the game must be purchased on each platform separately. “
Should You Expect Overwatch to Cross-Platform in the Future?
Now, this is the next question that appears in most players’ thoughts: will they ever be able to enjoy overwatch as a cross-platform game? If the sources of trustworthy, director Game Overwatch Jeff Kaplan while talking about Overwatch 2 said that this team was very much interested in Crossplay and the players would also get to play in the core competitive mode.
So the idea is quite interesting for the overwatch team, but they are still looking into it. However, there are reasons why they have not implemented it yet. 2019 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone is a clear example of how cross-platform support will work for overwatch. Both of these games support Crossplay and Cross-progress with the help of an Activision ID so that all your activities are related to your Activision account. This will help when you shift the platform, your progress will be done forward by just logging into your account.
In the case of overwatch, the progress is not connected with an external account and is somewhat related to online services that support your platform. And if you want to move it to an external account, this can make you lose all the progress you have created in the game. And I don’t think there are people who want to lose their progress and start from the beginning of the level one more.
So there is a possibility that the minimum overwatch will never support CrossPlay, however, you can expect with Overwatch 2. As Blizzard has been mentioned that players will be able to play together in competitive mode after implementing the external progress tracking system.
What are other problems for overwatch to support cross-platforms?
Put aside all technical problems; The main setback that overwatch facing to become a cross-platform is a keyboard and mouse. Supports Overwatch controllers on consoles and PCs, you can use the keyboard and mouse but still, you cannot use it on the PS4 or Xbox One.
Another statement was given by the game director, “Overwatch Team objected to the use of the mouse and keyboard on the console.”
Now the explanation for this runs as- they don’t put a ban on using the keyboard and mouse on the console but if one person will use the keyboard and mouse on the console and other people use the controller, this will provide unfair benefits for people using the keyboard.
There are other games that support Crossplay regardless of the input device that you use but for the overwatch team, it is an important advantage in terms of this game.
Take the example overwatch league where overwatch players will be more skilled with the controller when compared to the player with the keyboard and mouse. Overwatch is always special about playing style and therefore emphasizes more on skills.
In addition, you should not expect a quick solution to this with the launch of Overwatch 2. Even if the Xbox Series X and PS5 support the keyboard and mouse, which does not give you a guarantee that the developer will support it. So for now, you have to be satisfied with whatever you have and allowed to use it.
