What does profitable mean? Definition and examples

If a business is profitable, it signifies that it generates a net gain rather than a deficit, indicating financial success. In a non-business context, the term denotes something advantageous or beneficial. For instance, if I state, “I’ve had a profitable day,” it implies a day well spent, one that has provided value or benefit.

This article primarily focuses on the business-related interpretation of the term.

The Cambridge Dictionary has the following definition of the term:

“Resulting in or likely to result in a financial gain or advantage.”

A profitable organization

when we use the term “profitable,” we refer to businesses that yield a surplus. Profit is realized when the income generated surpasses the expenses incurred. Essentially, it implies that more money is received than expended. The objective of all business enterprises is to maximize their profit potential.

Businesses use different strategies to generate profits. Before deciding to approve a new project, management tries to determine whether it is economically viable.

“Profitability” in this context means profitability, but not just in the short term. A profitable business or project is one that is expected to generate a profit each year.

According to SmallBusiness.Chron.com:“A profitable organization is one that makes more money than it spends. A profitable organization is a business that uses a variety of tactics to generate profits.

”Etymology of profitable

Etymology is the study of the origin of words and the evolution of their meanings.

The term emerged in the English language in his 13th century and meant “useful, helpful”. It comes from the Old French “profitable, profitable”.

It wasn’t until 1758 that it also acquired the specific meaning of “making money.”

Most Profitable Small Business

Some businesses are inherently easier to make profit than others. In some cases, costs and overheads are very low, while in other cases consumers are willing to pay higher prices for products and services. SmallBizTrends.com listed the following companies as the most profitable small businesses in 2018:

  • Tax preparation and accounting. Bookkeeping involves recording all of a company’s day-to-day financial transactions.
  • Catering services.
  • Website design.
  • Business consulting.
  • Courier services.
  • Mobile hairdressing.
  • Cleaning services.
  • Tutoring online.
  • Logo design.
  • Real estate brokering.
  • Property maintenance.
  • Warehouse storage.
  • IT support.
  • Personal training.

For small businesses, services are more profitable than manufacturing, for example.
