Occupational medicine is concerned with maintaining the health of employees in the workplace. It includes the treatment of injuries and illnesses as well as their prevention.
The second goal of occupational medicine is to increase or maintain productivity.
Occupational physicians diagnose, manage, and prevent injuries and illnesses caused or exacerbated by workplace factors. They focus on all aspects of the impact of work on health and occupational health.
Occupational medicine – nature of work
Occupational doctors visit workplaces and assess a range of work-related health problems.
Part of their job is to help employees stay at work or return to work. In most cases, employees have had accidents or illnesses.
Occupational doctors work in their country’s health services and in large organizations. For example, they may work in the armed forces, transport organizations and emergency services. Many manufacturers have their own in-house occupational health services.
Occupational safety and health
Occupational medicine, we are used to calling it occupational medicine, is a branch of occupational safety and health (OSH). OSH concerns the safety, health and well-being of people in the workplace.
OSH also includes the welfare of employers, customers, suppliers and anyone else the workplace may affect.
We also call it Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), Occupational Health or Occupational Health and Safety (OHS).
Occupational medicine – common problems
Occupational doctors often face the following problems:
- Asbestos related diseases.
- Work is associated with stress.
- Deaf due to noise.
- Back-ache.
- Problems caused by chemical exposure and vibrations can be caused.
