Harpic: A Journey from the UK to India’s Toilets

The origins of Harpic might surprise you—it’s not an Indian company, as many may have assumed. Contrary to popular belief, Harpic actually originated in the United Kingdom in the 1920s. Back then, when Harpic first entered the Indian market, skepticism abounded, but it eventually emerged as a major success. Let’s delve into the fascinating story of Harpic.

Harpic Company Details

Harpic Company Is From Which Country United Kingdom
Established Year 1920
Harpic Company Owner Reckitt Benckiser Group plc
Harpic Company Headquarters Slough, England, United Kingdom

Harpic Company Founders N/A
Parent Company Of Harpic Reckitt Benckiser Group plc

The Harpic Origin

The journey of Harpic traces back to North Yorkshire in the 1920s when a person named Harry Pickup embarked on a mission to create an effective cleaning solution for toilets. He named his creation Harpic, and soon, it gained widespread recognition for its remarkable ability to make toilets shine while eliminating unpleasant germs. By 1932, Harpic had transcended being just Harry’s project; it partnered with the prominent Reckitt Benckiser Group Plc. While the latter might not be a household name, in 1999, it was a powerhouse in the business world. Now, let’s shift our focus to India. In 1984, Harpic made its entry, leaving people intrigued. “Toilet cleaners? What’s that?” they pondered. However, Harpic was no ordinary toilet cleaner—it had a unique formula, a thick liquid that adhered to bowls like a koala to a tree, and it emitted a pleasant fragrance. Despite a slow start, Harpic gained popularity in India.

Harpic’s Impact in India

In India, Harpic embarked on a transformative journey in the way toilets are cleaned. Through clever advertisements and a uniquely designed bottle that could reach every corner, Harpic aimed not only to clean but also to educate. The bottle featured a neck that bent like a swan’s, a practical design ensuring that the cleaning solution reached every spot, especially in Indian toilets, while maintaining septic tanks. Harpic spared no expense on advertising and enlisted Bollywood celebrities like Akshay Kumar to endorse their products, effectively reaching the masses. The introduction of Harpic in India marked a turning point in toilet cleaning practices, forever altering the landscape.
