Kia Parent Company: Kia Motors, a South Korean automotive manufacturer, is recognized for its annual production of over 1.4 million vehicles, making it the world’s fifth-largest motor vehicle producer. The Hyundai Motor Company holds the majority of Kia Motors shares, with a 33% stake, while the remaining shares are distributed among other corporations and individuals.

History

Founded in 1944, Kia stands as the oldest motor vehicle manufacturer in Korea. Initially specializing in the production of steel tubing, bicycles, and bicycle parts, the company later expanded to manufacturing Honda-licensed motorcycles and Mazda-licensed trucks. The inaugural integrated automotive assembly plant was established in 1973, marking the commencement of car production in 1974.

Following a financial setback in 1997, Kia entered into a partnership with the Hyundai Motor Company, resulting in Hyundai acquiring a 51% stake. Subsequent disinvestments have reduced Hyundai’s ownership to 33%. Additionally, Kia Motors holds ownership of 22 subsidiaries of Hyundai Motor Company.

Manufacturing Facilities

Kia operates three vehicle manufacturing facilities in South Korea, located in Sohari, Hwasung, and Kwangju. The company boasts a cutting-edge research and development center in Namyang, South Korea, and an eco-technology research center near Seoul focusing on fuel cell technology and advanced vehicle recycling processes.

Beyond South Korea, Kia Motors has manufacturing facilities in Georgia, United States, and Zilina, Slovakia. The Zilina facility caters to 54% of the demand for Kia products in the European market. Furthermore, the company maintains numerous assembly and manufacturing plants in eight different countries.

Product Range

Kia Motors offers a diverse range of vehicles, including sedans, luxury cars, electric cars, and sports cars. Notable models in their lineup include the Kia Seltos, Kia Carens, Kia Sonet, Kia EV6, Kia Sportage, and Kia Carnival. The distribution of these vehicles spans a network of over 3,000 distributors across 172 countries.

Revenue

In the fiscal year 2022, Kia Motors reported earnings of 86.6 trillion Korean won, equivalent to approximately USD 65.73 billion. This marks a substantial increase compared to the company’s revenues of 29.26 trillion Korean won in 2009, reflecting a notable growth trend during the 2009-2022 period.
